Dan,

What is it you're looking for in his birth record that wouldn't be in the death record? A lot of times death records can be just as helpful if not more than birth records. Not to mention a birth record from Erzerum is going to be next to impossible to find unless it escaped Armenia in his possession. I'd suggest pursuing the much easier/quicker process of obtaining the death cert. and go from there. Contact the local government vital records department in the area that he passed away, there is usually an insignificant fee, and if in person you can usually pick them up the same day requested.
