No, it was just a guess. I know others who have simply dropped the "ian" from the end of the name. And I don't know what the name means.

Some things you might try -
Check the records at ellisisland.org, and see if you recognize any of the first names. Also, look at the images of the original manifests for names of people they left behind and names and addresses of people they were going to see in the US. Check census records for the people they were going to see. Don't be attached to any particular spelling of the names - they change a lot.

Check current phone directories online for the different spellings. I see listings for Topuz and Topouzian in the verizon.com white pages. Call them, and see if they know anything.

I assume you've already talked to all the relatives you know. If not, track them down and talk to them. You'll get little bits and pieces from different places, and you may be able to put it together.

Track down the legal records - birth, death and marriage certificates, naturalization papers, social security applications, etc. You can find alternate spellings and parents' names.
