OK. Maybe he wanted to be less conspicuous, or if he changed it when he moved, maybe to differentiate himself from other (unrelated) families with the same name.
I'll mention that one difficulty in tracing surnames is that it was common to take your father's first name as your last name, so they changed every generation. I've seen a lot of that in the Ellis Island records. Spellings changed a lot of times, too. I've seen Terzian and Tarzian interchangeable.
