Hi Jesse,
A couple of items to focus on ... First, beginning with your own birth certificate, trace the marriage and birth of your parents and then their parents. Each record should contain information on the names of the parents of either the child at birth or the bride and groom at marriage. You can continue tracing back by contacting the town in which you are seeking a birth or marriage certificate. If possible, you could also check death certificates, but they are much less reliable. In this way, you should be able to get the first name of your great grandfather.
At this point you could do a check of the Ellis Island records (which is possible to do via the internet now) for your great grandfather. If this does not work you might be able to get some other information from naturalization papers or census records. At least it is a start.
