Marguerite and Leon Sarkissian m 1903

Here is some information about my elusive great grandparents, if any of these names ring a bell, please let me know. One note is that the name Sarkissian is not their real name. It is the only name that I ever knew them by, but it was changed when they left Russia:

Margaurite Gregorovna Bejanian
b. Dec. 14, 1886 Tiflis Georgia, Family possibly from the Van region.
m. Oct. 1903 Tiflis Georgia,
d June 30, 1970, Napa California

Daughter of

Gregory I. Bejanian ( or in Armenian Krikor I. Bejanian)
b. circa 1855

and

Cathrine ( Sophia) Dzmokova Tamookian
b. circa 1860

Margaurite was the wife of :

Leon Issacovich ( son of Issac) "Sarkissian"
b. July 9, of some year ( prob. between 1870-1884)

Margaurite was one of eleven children. Known siblings include:

Joseph "the favorite" ( of course)- an Engineer?
Issac
Rose (Dr)
Vera
Elena ( degree in Botony and Mathmatics)

Leon , I believe, had 6 siblings, none of which are known to me.

It is my assumption that Leons family lived in Odessa Russia. They
certinally had property there and lived there at two known dates; 1903
and 1920.

Leon and Margaurite were married in a typical manner for there time and
station; it was arranged.

The following is an account drawn from many interviews and memories, and
fragentary evidences. It would probably be in serious dispute with some
members of the family. However; all members of the family have different
information and, none are in possesion of the whole story ( including
yours truley)

Sometime after the Marriage of Leon and Margaurite they lived in Turkey.
There was repeated reference to the Golden Horn of Constantinople. This
was where only the most wealthy persons lived. By 1917 they were living
in Ankora Turkey. Leon had a shop there. This was unusuall for many
reasons. The first was that Leon was an Armenian and the turks were
busing killing as many as possible, and second; Leon was an officer in th
Imperial Russian Army which was at war with Turkey at the time.

Once word of the Revolution reached Leon, in 1917, he locked the doors
and immediatly went home and re-activated his commission. He was a Major
or Lt. Col in the Army. He is next known to have been in the town where
the Czar was killed, shortly before and during the execution. After the
execution they left. They were afraid of being recognized. Leon went back
to the White Army and Margaurite, his daughter , and ( either ) his
father or father in law, followed in a train. They were living in thier
own train car. One they owned. Again this is consistant with the ultra
rich. They would leave messages for each other in code on the walls of
the train stations. This was a job entrusted to Anna. Somewhere on this
road the train was boarded by bandits. The grandfather of Anna tried to
freighten the bandits with the name of the man who owned the car. The
bandits murdered Annas grandfather, but Anna and Margaurite were allowed
to leave. The family evidently made their way back to Odessa. It was
1919/20 when the advance of the Red Army forced the evacuation of , some,
of the whites from Odessa. Leon and Margaurite missed the "last boat to
England" ( it was in this evacuation and only this evacuation that it was
possible to miss "the last boat to England". No matter what Uncle Paul
says. He says this was in 1917. It was impossible as the Turks were
still in firm control of the route into the Black Sea until 1919; and
would not have allowed Britsh ships into the Black Sea. The Britsh were
at war with the Turks at the time).

It seems that after this they tried to slip into obscurity with the Red
occupation. At school one day Anna, and the other students, were asked to
inform on anyone who was a White officer or official. When Anna got home
and told her parents what happened they took their , prepacked, bags and
left.

They made it to Turkey, perhaps with the retreating remenents of the
White Army. From their they took ship to China. They lived in Harbin,
then went down to Mukden, and then Tien-sien, and Shanghi.

That was the short verson.
