Hi again,
I was going to answer your e-mail tonight because I spent the day at the Arland house, and the people who own it now sent home with me all the information they have on the Arlands. So now I have much more to be able to tell you.
James was the son of "Mr. and Mrs. Richard Arland," according to his obituary, which is very extensive. He was born April 24, 1858, at Middleton, Wisconsin. He and his family, after an "arduous journey, arrived in Washington in 1863. In 1881, James married Sarah Medcalf, the daughter of a pioneer family; her mother was said to be the first white woman in the county.
The current owner of the beautiful house James built in western Montesano in 1913 said that Beth Adams was married in the house, which really is a mansion. It has several stories and takes your breath away when you step inside. Beth was "married in front of the fireplace," I was told. James built the home and operated a huge dairy farm there and was called "one of the earliest outstanding dairymen of the region."
How is Beth related to James? A niece, perhaps? Is she still living?
I have a lot more information now and will share with you whatever you would like. I've just had surgery, so I'll close this post and e-mail you in the next day or so. The people who live in James' home would very much like to have anything more on the family. They have very little, for instance, on his first wife, Sarah, and are hoping there may be a picture still extant.
I'll be in touch again soon, Tom
