Louise: I do not know if you understand spanish because most of the information about Prudencio Juan de Murguiondo that I found over the net is in sapnish. To make a long story short and to answer some of your questions:
yes it was usual to drop the "de" from the front of the names and because at indepenence time that prefix meaned that you were of some kind of nobility in Spain.
Usually the spanish have very young officer in their navy because it was something like a family affair, the father put the son in some place in the navy by buying it,it was very usual that at 14 or 15 years of age they began a career in the service (army or navy).
For the last use http://www.google.comhttp://www.google.com to look up for the name you are searching, this is a very good searching tool, when you get at the google place click on the advanced search, after that where it says look for exactly the words put the name and after that look for the language that you are going to search and select spanish, now click on google search. The list you are going to get is most of the places at the internet that have any kind of reference to the name you look at. If you need any more help just contact me and I'll try to help you. When I answer you for the first time, at the same time sent a e-mail to the nautical school in Uruguay asking for help telling them that I was resarching the name for genealogy but until now I've got no answer.
