I am descended from Hendrikus Bernardus Arends, Uithuizen, Groningen. He was married to Geziena Joan Bos. I believe he died around 1878.

He had at least five sons who settled in the USA: Will, Ben, John, Nick, and Jacob (my grandfather). My grandfather was born on March 26, 1871. Jacob settled in Chicago, Illinois and was a baker. Two of his brothers were cobblers. One was an engraver.

Around twenty years ago, I was in Mankato, Minnesota on business. I noticed a lot of Arends in the telephone book. After my parents died, I got some boxes containing my father's siblings records. My Aunt Elizabeth Arends (Alton) had a map of Mankato (from the forties?). Perhaps one of my grandfather's brothers settled there.

The Dutch naming traditions are apparent. My father, Edward's siblings were: Henry, John, Joseph, Bernard, and Elizabeth.

Anyone see any connections?

Best Regards,

Ed Arends (Long Beach, California)
