Barbara,
You are correct in your observation.I have been researching the Arendell family for several years and have discovered over 60 different spellings of the name. Most members of my Arendell line (who came to Texas from Kentucky in 1848) pronounced the name ARN'dell in the early 1900s.This fact helps explain why it was often recorded as "Arndell" or "Arnold" by clerks trying to spell the name as they heard it pronounced.I have also seen it spelled in such extreme variations as "Arnal," "Arendale," "Arrundel," "Orindall," and even "Randle."I have found some documents where the name was spelled three different ways in the same document.I have also found cases where one brother spelled it "Arendell" and another spelled it "Arnold," and each of their descendants propagated the spelling variation. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly when some of these changes became fixed in a particular family line; it probably happened in different lines at different times. All of these facts make researching this family a particular challenge!Good luck in your research!
