Arden Family Genealogy Forum

Sally,
I recently found that my husband's family is descended from Elizabeth Price Stevens, daughter of Robert Price and Sarah Webb. Elizabeth was captured in the Deerfield MA raid of 1704 and brought to Montreal where she remarried a Frenchman. Sarah was killed in the raid. I found that Sarah's Webb ancestors go back to the Webb and Arden grandparents of William Shakespeare. I have been trying to find information on the Ardens. I have seen several pedigrees from the LDS site which show the family going back to before William the Conqueror. From what little I have seen, I don't think the family came from France, but changed the name to de Arden to conform with the Norman conquerors. In reading some material about the Domesday book, the Arden family was one of the few families who retained their estates under William. Most of the Saxon estates were taken over by the Normans. There is some reference to the Arden estates being retained by ?? a Danish earl, I believe.(I am typing this from memory). The Angles, as in Anglo-Saxon, were a Viking group, so it the Danish connection and the existence of the Ardens before the Norman invasion makes sense. I'm not sure why they were allowed to keep their lands when everyone else lost theirs. The Ardens or deArdens were a prominent and noble family from what I have found so far which is mostly just snippets of information; mentions of various residences etc. There must be a published history of this family somewhere. I have been searching on the net for about a week, sent queries to various places in England, but haven't found anything yet. There are probably millions of Arden descendants by now in England (well, hundreds of thousands anyway). There has got to be something, somewhere. If you run across anything, would you let me know and I will do the same if you are interested in pursuing this branch of the family. Thanks.
