Eve Arden - Stage, Screen, Television

Eve Arden (1910-1990) was always one of my favorite actresses. I am too young to have seen her on stage (1930's and on) but did listen to "Our Miss Brooks" on radio and later on TV, and saw her in various movies from Joan Crawford's "Mildred Pierce" right up to "Grease II" in the late 1980's at the end of her long career.

I truly believe she was a "queen of comedy" because her comic timing was impeccable. She knew just how long to wait for the applause and laughter to die down - then "zing" us with a punchline. She was truly a "pro" - there is a great story when she was all alone on stage, when the tech crew decided to make the phone ring while she was doing a monolog. Without batting an eyelash, she picked up the ringing phone, listened a moment, then held it to the offstage crew and said "it's for you" ! No one tried to throw her off her lines again during the run.

Was her real name Arden ? Does anyone posting here know more about the origin of her family and how they came to be in the USA ?
