I just ran a check on the census data for Kentucky in 1810 (CD#313) using the same method described in my initial message. Here are the results for five single-gender households:

ADAM, William J. 00000-00100-00
ADAMS, George 00000-00100-00
ADAMS, James 00000-00010-00

ADAMS, Ann 10101-00000-00
AMIS, Catherine 30100-00000-00

It appears that the 1810 Kentucky census data have the numerical data switched, with females first and males second.
