My name is Ray Kevin Arebaugh
I have come accross some info on Lorentz and Balthes Erbach.I have not confirmed anything yet, and I am just beginning to gather all the info I can before going to Germany in the future.
Here is what I have thus far.
First Adam was not Adam, but possibly "Adolph".In the book "Pennsylvania German Pioneers", v1 on pages 600 thru 604 it has listed an "Aldolph Ourback" who came to America through Philadelphia, Pa. aboard the ship "Adventure" in 1754.The ship set sail from Hamburg, Germany (note this may not be where Adam "Adolph" came from).
In the same book on page 604 Adolph's last name is actually spelled as Urbach.I mentioned that just toshow that even in his native country they spelled his name several different ways. In the wills probated for Greenbrier County (at the time Virginia) for 1800 it mentions for a Adam Arbaugh that his wife was "Mary Griffths the daughter of Able Griffths".Again I have not positively confirmed this.
Adam is supposed to have had at least three children: Barbara Arbaugh born about 1815-1830 in Greenbrier County. A second daughter who I have not run accross the name of yet, and a son, John Arbaugh who I am supposed to be decendant from born about 1770.
It is said also the Adam/ Adolph had come to America with his brothers. This is probably false, however, I do think that he had brothers, and to add "sisters" who came to this country, just not at the same time.Let me give you the info.
In the same book, Pennsylvania German Pioneers", v1 on page 355, Lorentz Erbach is listed as having coming to America on the ship "Phoenix" from "Rotterdam & last from Crowes." The date for this is October 20th, 1744.
Also in Pennsylvania German Pioneers", v1 on page 372, Balthes Erbach is listed as having coming to America on the ship "Edinburgh" from "Rotterdam but last from Portsmouth." The date for this is September 5th, 1748.
In the book "Eighteenth Century Register of Emigrants from Southwest Germany, on pg 102 there is listed a "Lorenz Erbach" who left Germany to came to the US in 1743.
There is also a "Balthasar Erbach" who left Germany to came to the US in 1748.
Also mentioned is a "Ana Catharina Erbach" who left Germany to came to the US in 1741.And finally mentioned is a "Martha Margaret Erbach" who left Germany to came to the US in 1747.Two things here are worth mentioning, first there is now mention of Adam or Adolph in this book. Now that could be because of all the spellings, and I have not run accross his yet (but I'll keep looking), secondly all of these people come not only the same region but the same town, and I'll explain the importance to this a little later. The town that these people came from was St. Johann/ Sprendlingen which is located in a region of Germany called "Franconia", now Franconia is located in "Deutschland" and is in the Rhineland part of Germany, very near what today is called Frankfurt and nott Hamburg.
The story as I heard from my father. My father was Charles Forest Arebaugh, born to Leonard W. Arbaugh and Edith May (Leonard being from Vinton County, Ohio and my father being from Farmersburg, Sullivan County, Indiana), is that the family originated in Germany in the Rhineland and that they were actually German-Deutsch (as different from Dutch). With the info from the above sources and, I hope from more sources in the future (after I have gotten everything together, true or false), I will go to Germany and verify all the info), I can speculate that I am on the right track and I hope to have this mystery solved soon.
I hope this helps you, and I hope that you can give me some insight into this.
