I believe the story goes ... several Arants (Arnt's, etc.several variations) came (escaping religious persecution) from the Palatinate (sp?) in Germany travelling in a large group up the Rhine river to Rotterdam. They were welcomed (for the most part)in London/Ireland to await passage to the "Americas" and the promise of land. They sailed into Philadelphia (my direct relatives were on the Ship Hope Peter & Herman Arnt in 1733). It looks like they travelled to the Carolinas for the opportunity to obtain land(remember the Carolinas stretched across parts of the states of Tennessee/Kentucky which were Indian lands at the time). From South Carolina, my line went to Kentucky -- others went to Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia. I have found Arants receiving land grants in the Oklahoma territory (Emily Arant/Lawton-1882) to Alaska. It is obvious to me that establishing a home and owning land was very important to the Arants, and they appear to have been among the first settlers in many areas. It is an interesting family to track, and I believe a little easier than some because the name is not that common. Good luck in your research!
