Clara -- I have much the same story on my maternal grandfather's family. He is on the 1900 Jackson Co., AR census with only four children. Supposedly he had at least 10 children by this first marriage, so his wife and at least six children died between 1875 and 1900. So, the epidemic that hit my family had to have occurred before 1900. I, too, am trying to determine what it was.
