Mason H. Reed, born 1842 son of James Reed and Alcy Ferguson of Washington County, Arkansas enlisted in Company A, 13th Kansas Infantry on the 15 November 1862 at Camp Babcock. The locality of Camp Babcock is not given. The file states variously that Mason Reed died 6 June 1864 in Fort Smith Arkansas either of Typhoid Fever, or as the result of being wounded at the Battle of Prairie Grove (Washington County), Arkansas. Mason Reed was married 16 October 1856 to Sarah Prater by William Prater, JP in Madison County, Arkansas. She was a daughter of Elijah Prater and Jemima Patrick of Madison County, Arkansas. According to the pension file, Sarah Prater died 17 October 1877 in Washington County, Arkansas, and is buried at St. Paul in Madison County, Arkansas. The family bible is cited as evidence of the marriage of Mason H. Reed to Sarah. In 1878 the bible was in the possession of Wm Cochran who married Sarah, the widow of Mason H. Reed and the mother of his children. Wm Cochran's residence is given as Coon Creek, Barton County, Missouri.
The Mason Reed pension provides for his minor children William Elijah Reed born 24 July 1859 and Nathaniel Reed born 23 March 1862, and continued only until they turned sixteen. In 1877 Nathaniel Reed and William E. Reed were living in Coon Creek, Barton County, Missouri. Witnesses named in the pension file are Wm Gilson, M.H. Gilson, William Tucker, Wiley A. Tucker, and Jemima Prater. E.C. Morlan of Barton County, Missouri was the attorney and legal guardian of William E. Reed and Nathaniel Reed.
