Quillen, Wayland, Anderson
Teague and Mary Herring Quillen migrated to Cumberland County, NC with Delaney Herring (Larry Herrin info). In 1765 Delaney Herring executed a Deed to Gift to the following who were living with Mary Underwood. The children named in the Deed of Gift were listed in this order with Quilling(s) referred to as their last name:
Susannah (nothing is known about her)
Teague (remained in NC)
William (moved around a lot: NC, VA, poss. SC, and GA)
James (settled in Georgia)
John (remained in NC)
Charles (relocated to TX: Fannin Co. Red River area that later became later Grayson Co.)
The Deed of Gift included household items and some livestock.
I am assuming that since Teague was not mentioned and the woman the children were living with was named Mary, that Teague may have died and Mary remarried to an Underwood. I suspect this all occurred in Cumberland County and that there may be a marriage bond or record of death for Teague. Quillen names and Underwood names are found in the Surry and Stokes County, NC areas where it is known that the children migrated to.
It would seem logical that "this" Delaney Herring had a close connection to the children and perhaps may have been their grandfather. Seeking to provide for his grandchildren he gave them the items in the Deed of Gift. Delaney Herring could not have died prior to August of 1765 as that is the date of the Deed of Gift. Delaney is not heard from any further.
Descendants of William are believed to have migrated to the Washington Co. area of Arkansas in the early 1850s.Cousins of the Quillen family were the Wayland family who migrated to Lawrence Co. area in Arkansas in the early 1800s.In the 1860s there were Quillen names in Carroll Co.One was Nancy Quillen, widow of Thomas Quillen, possible son of William Quillen, my ancestor.Descendant Rebecca Anderson came with her daughter, Mary "Polly" Davis's family, to Carroll Co. in the mid 1800s.By 1870 they had moved into KS and Rebecca was no longer living.
There are several variatons of the name. If anyone can help to shed light on any of these people I would appreciate hearing from you.
