I'm searching for information on a hotel that existed during the 1860's known as CHANDLER'S TAVERN located at Main and Washington in El Dorado, AR. The owner, William CHANDLER b. abt 1814 GA and later moved to AL prior to coming to AR. He combined two buildings forming a 22 room hotel. In 1863 Mr. CHANDLER died leaving the establishment to his widow, Sarah M. CHANDLER. She later sold it to a Mr. ARMSTRONG and it became known as the ARMSTRONG HOTEL.
William Chandler along with five other prominent men of El Dorado were given a smallpox vaccine to keep them from getting the dreaded disease. I believe all but one died with a few hours due to the vaccine becoming rancid. Most of the younger men had gone to fight the Civil War leaving these men to protect the town and it's people.
Any information on this incident would be greatly appreciated. William Chandler's children married into the CAUDLE,CHEW, GOODWIN, LANGFORD and TATUM families of Union County. I believe William CHANDLER is buried in the Old Presbyterian Cemetary located in El Dorado. The name William CHANDLER is found on one of the markers but the dates worn and unreadable.
