Tom Yates

I'm looking for information on Tom Yates. His father's name was Samuel Yates and his mother's Jane Davis Yates. He was born in North Carolina between 1831 and 1870. He was shot and killed in either Hardy or Williford. He is buried in the Williford Cemetery. The story goes that he was shot for steeling horses. What I would like to know is:
1. when he was shot and kill
2. why he was shot
3. where he was shot
4. who shot him
any information would be helpful
Thank You
David
