I am looking for information about Missouri and Amanda Dukes, daughters of Major and Elizabeth Dukes of Sharp County.
The first reference I find of Missouri is the 1850 Census for Sharp County. Missouri is listed as Missouri Smith age 22 and living with her parents and siblings. Also in the household is John Smith age 8. Presumably, Missouri is a widow and John is either her son or stepson.
QUESTION: Who was Missouri’s husband?
The 1860 Census for Sharp County shows Missouri as Missouri Clements, age 32 and living with Adam Clements, age 32, and 7 children. One child, John Clements, age 14, would be too young to be John Smith of the 1850 Census, and too old to have been Missouri’s child.
QUESTION: What happened to John Smith?
The first reference I find of Amanda is also in the 1860 Census. She’s Amanda Hutchison, age 26, married to William Hutchison. They have five children. Her oldest daughter is Nancy.
Missouri and Amanda’s mother, Elizabeth H. McLain Dukes, dies in approximately 1866, and her will lists her children by name. This appears to confirm that Missouri Smith was Missouri Clements (The will spells it Clemmons) at the time of her mother’s death, and confirms that Amanda’s married name was Hutchison.
The 1870 Census for Sharp County shows Missouri, age 44, but no Adam. Missouri has at least three more children than she had in 1860.
With one exception, I haven’t found a reference in the 1870 Census for Sharp County for the Hutchison family. Amanda’s daughter, Nancy, is shown as married to T.D. Smith, both age 22, with one child Willa (?) female, age 14 months.
QUESTION: What happened to the Hutchison’s (Am I just missing the record?)
QUESTON: Is T.D. Smith related to the Smith that Amanda’s sister, Missouri, married?
Census 1880 and 1890 – No findings for Clements/Clemmons, Hutchison or Smith.
The 1900 Indian Territory Census shows Theodore D. (“Dick”) and Nancy Smith and 4 children, and a possible Hutchison in-law, but writing is illegible. Nancy is listed as having 9 children, 8 of which were living at the time of the Census.
QUESTION: When did Dick and Nancy arrive in IT?
Sometime after 1900, Nancy dies and family lore has it that Dick married a woman named Missouri Clements/Clemmons. Hard to believe that Dick would have married his wife’s aunt who was 22 years older than he. She would have been 74 and he 52.
QUESTION: Did the original Missouri Clements/Clemmons have a daughter, niece or granddaughter that married Dick?
If anyone has information or speculation about any of this, please respond.
