My grandfather, John C. Crawford held many public offices in St. Francis County. At different times he was Constable, Justice of Peace, and Coroner. He was Constable in 1930 when he went to arrest a drunk man, William Black, and Mr. Black shot him. Grandpa's leg had to be removed as a result of the shooting. He was crippled the rest of his life. He was Coroner in 1937 when the plane crashed close to Goodwin. He held the inquest over the victims that night. That was the biggest plane incident in U.S. up to that time. He talked to Pres. Roosevelt that night. He held the inquest over the victims of the Downey Hotel fire in 1943.We lived across the road from the hotel and watched the building burn that night. I knew many of the people that perished in that fire. Grandpa died three nights later. He is buried in Hughes Cemetery.
