A couple, Virginia LaFayette (Davis) (1834-1886) and Colonel Oliver Crosby GRAY (1831-1905) from Maine adopted Arkansas to educate its youth in 1860, and they did, --- she till death by cancer in 1886 and he for 45-years until death 1905.
He fought 4-years for Confederate Army, last year a Union prisoner. Her civil war diary was published in Arkansas Historical Quarterly's spring and summer issues in 1983.
Buildings were named for him in 1869 and 1906, but demolished late 1940's for the Governors Mansion and 1966 for Mullins Library!
We seek active support to re-establish past honors, with additional justified new ones for this couple!
We found no couple contributed more to youth education, to the state of Arkansas nor to Arkansas Industrial University than did the Grays from Maine! She in 1874 first chair of Art Department, he first chair of what became Engineering School.
A documented 250-page booklet "The Grays From Maine", 9-months in research will be mailed 15 Jan 2004 to following:
Little Rock area;
Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, Arkansas School for the Blind, Arkansas History Commission, University of Arkansas System, Dr. Carl H. Moneyhon, and the Library of the Grand Lodge of Arkansas.
Fayetteville area;
Arkansas Alumni Association, Fayetteville Public Library, Mullins Library - Special Collections, Rogers Historical Museum, Shilo Museum of Ozark History, Washington County Historical Society, and Northwest Arkansas Genealogical Society.
You are encouraged to visit one of these establishments, review this documented booklet, then organize your support to honor the Grays from Maine!
