John, I was born in Keevil township not far from Clarendon in 1935 by a doctor; but my older brother was supposed to be delivered by a midwife, but when there were complications a doctor was brought in.
In Keevil, I believe that most midwives were older women in your own family or in the community, i.e. 2 of my great aunts who had had 10 and 12 children were called midwives. So in most cases it would have been someone that the family knew well.
