I wonder if J. W. Smith who married Elizabeth Hines, was the father of Cordelia, who married Elizabeth's son Andrew Allen. J A Allen was surety for J W Smith. Andrew was listed as J A Allen in a couple of early records, and it would make sense to be a surety for your father-in-law. I don't find evidence of Smith's prior wife either living or dying after the 1900 census. Food for thought.
