BOATMAN & PUCKETT, 1908-1910
Posted by: Wayne Pounds (ID *****4661) Date: April 22, 2013 at 22:51:56

I'm looking for a lawman (probably a sheriff--I have searched the US Marshals databases) named BOATMAN (first name unknown) who about 1908 married Leila PUCKETT of Kentucky. He was shot and killed in the line of duty sometime between that date and April 1910. The county is said to have been Wagoner but could have been Muskogee. Any help much appreciated!

Here's what I've found so far.

Chronicles of Oklahoma
Moses Boatman appointed postmaster for the community of Mark, Cherokee Nation, 6 Aug 1904

Tyner, Our People and Where They Rest
It appears that the three counties (Wagoner, Mayes, Muskogee) where I'm looking for Boatman are all within the boundaries of what was the Cherokee Nation. Some 17 present-day counties. Volume 11 has a photo and biographies of the Tyners.

Tyner, Our People, vol. 3, p. 88, Choska Cem., lists H. R. Boatman, no dates.Location: Sec. 26, R16E, T16N, Wagoner Co. "Fenced. A few plots are maintained. Some areas abandoned." He shows 81 numbered graves, many unnumbered. [These numbered diagrams can be used to find graves!] Boatman is also listed here, though some of the data is taken from the Tyners : http://www.okcemeteries.net/wagoner/choska/choska.htm
Also FAG: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GScid=98156&GRid=34875108&
FAG lists an Ora E. Boatman, 1891-1983, in Vernon Cem., Coweta, Wagoner.

Vol. 9, p60, Bryan's Chapel Cem., Mayes Co., recorded 1976.
Boatman, David L.               1844-1928
Boatman, Amanda J.               1855-1915
Boatman, E. A.                      1885-1905
Boatman, Daisy                     1909-1911

Vol. 11, p23
R. H. Boatman, 1879-1916, New Home Cem., 1 and 1/2 miles south of Peggs, Cherokee Co., well maintained. Cemetery established following the tornado of 2 May 1920. There's now a new stone in addition to the old one that was inscribed by hand. The new one says husband of Myrtie L. Boatman.

Mayes county borders Wagoner county, so they might be related. Most of Wagoner was in the Creek Nation and most of Mayes was in the Cherokee Nation. If he had been a federal Marshall, pre statehood, he probably worked out of Ft Smith, AR which is where a record would have been found at the Federal Courthouse there. However, I found nothing.

Ancestry shows a Joseph Paten Boatman, b1876 in Arkansas, died in Pryor, Mayes Co., no date given. Edmond R. Boatman, b. 1885, died 3 Apr 1905 in Boatman, Mayes, OK. Too young. A brother of Joseph P. Boatman.

The merchant Joe P. Boatman after whom BoatmanOK was named, was born in 1877 OK. 1930 census shows him in Mayes Co with wife Pearl, children Helen, Joe L., and Dorothy.
