Looking for a John Roberts whose original surname was Henley. They lived in NE Arkansas (I
suspect Lawrence/Craighead Co., though nothing certain) after the late 1880s thru the 1940s.
Here is the story:
John Roberts was originally born John Henley, to Hamilton M. Henley and Margaret Elizabeth
Parks in Pope Co., Illinois, about 1868. Sometime in the mid 1870s, Hamilton moved the
family to Missouri/Indian Territory (OK). (Hamilton's sister, Elizabeth Robertson, lived in
Butler Co., MO) Sometime in the late 1870s, Hamilton supposedly shot and killed a black man
in Indian Territory. He then changed the family surname to Roberts and it appears he changed
his own name to John Roberts (confusing, considering his son is also John Roberts). They
appear in the 1880 Buffalo Twsp, Newton Co., Missouri Census as Roberts. Sometime later, he
moved the family to NE Arkansas (possibly Jackson Co.) where they lived but he would come
from the Indian Territory to visit.
Sometime in the mid/late 1880s Hamilton died, falling off of a train into a cement pit
(mining pit?) coming across the border to Arkansas. Afterwards, the family reassumed the
Henley surname except the eldest son John, who retained the Roberts name due to his already
large and established family. It is this John Roberts I am looking for.
His mother Margaret Elizabeth died sometime in the 1890s and last 4 children were taken care
of by their brother Frank and his wife Lizzie, then by 1900, George, Fred and Della live
with Martha and her husband. I know John Roberts lives in that area and I have several good
candidates from the 1900 census, but I cannot point at one for sure due to birth info not
lining up.
