Thanks Thomas! I've got the information from the 1900 census. I was also able to confirm that the 2nd Cavalry unit remained in Cuba following the war. If this is the same Henry August Mayer, it puts him in the right place at the right time.
The link you supplied is one of the things I was REALLY in need of. I'll get his death certificate and see what I can find out from there.
