This William Smith family was living in Smithville Township, Dallas County, AR in the 1870 census. Have you checked out the Rootsweb sites for Dallas Co., AR? There is also a large site that contains some genealogical data on the Smith families who settled in Dallas Co., AR. Sometimes, an account book will survive that keeps a list of slaves names and births. I don't know if that exists, but it would be worth asking about. Do you have the links to the research on the Smith familys that show Samuel Harrison Smith as born in 1795, Caswell Co., NC, married Wake Co., NC, and had a daughter born in Hardeman Co., TN about 1838 or 1840? That would be about the same time that your William Smith was born in TN, so there is a good chance he was born in Hardeman Co., TN. As near as I can tell, the other Smith men who came to Dallas Co., AR and settled close to Samuel H. Smith were his brothers. Some of these Smith men died before the Civil War and were buried in Dallas Co. If their estates were probated, there is a very small chance that your ancestor's name would have been mentioned. Two of Samuel Smith's brothers lived beyond the Civil War, which means that slaves would have been freed before their wills were written, little chance of there being records there. It's rare, but just once in a blue moon, a link to a slave's ancestry will turn up in the former slave narratives recorded during the WPA public works projects. Check your public library to see if any of those books are in their holdings.
