Helton's on Trail of Tears

Daniel Hilton is listed on the Emigration Roll and would have been part of the Old Settlers who arrived in Arkansas in about 1828. Other oral tradition of our family says that one Helton family stopped off the boats in Jackson Co. AL (on the river) to have a baby. One of Daniel's sons is there later on, John Ransom Helton. This was during the time of the Trail of Tears. GA Helton's tell of going to Ross's Landing on the Tennessee River. I am guessing that some of their family were there to be removed. Oral tradition says that the Helton brothers came home from out West to find mother and father rounded up for the Trail of Tears. Both parents were old and died on the way. No clue as to who they were. Other oral tradition says many trips were made by the Helton's prior too and after the trail of tears. Some of these were made on up into the 1860's. I am hoping that more Indian removal stories come in so that we can piece together our heritage. Anyone with stories that relate to the Helton's and their Cherokee Heritage please send them in. mike helton
