LCM Fish Fry Fund Raiser A Huge Success

The March 8, 2002 Lonoke County Museum fish fry fundraiser was a tremendous success with over 350 in attendance at the Lonoke Primary. The fellowship freely flowed with politicians and guests alike having a grand time. Smiles and good times were abundant with numerous out of town guests being present.
Jim Parks and Lloyd Whitaker, candidates for mayor of Lonoke, spoke briefly as did Randy Minton of Cabot, a Republican candidate from Lonoke County running for office.
Earnest Best of Des Arc, the author of Sharecropper’s Son, gave brief remarks regarding his childhood in Lonoke County. Best’s childhood friend of over 80 years, Les Hooks of Grady, was also introduced and shared his pleasure at being in attendance. Both of these gentlemen are 90 years young and were totally enjoying themselves.
Charles Cunning, a former resident of Lonoke County, made a presentation to Linda Acrey, emcee, for the Lonoke County Museum of a Joe T. Robinson ledger that was utilized by the late Senator Robinson during his illustrious career in the U. S. Senate. Cunning of Hot Springs, and the author of Memories of Ward, Arkansas, was accompanied by his wife, Patty, and sister, Jo Ellen Moore of Sherwood.
The Brownsville Baptist Children’s Choir under the able direction of Ms. Robby Watson was warmly received as they gave praises in song with such old time favorites as “Jesus Loves Me” and “The B-i-b-l-e.” With her strong voice Barbara Carroll sang a gospel number Acapulco. The closing musical presentation was that of the Greater Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church Men’s Chorus of Little Rock, a real crowd pleaser with their rich resounding voices singing praises to the Lord.
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Horn of Ward were the very pleased winners of the beautiful handmade quilt donated by Sherryl Miller. The cakewalk was also a great favorite with many individuals of all ages taking home the baked goodies of the LCM ladies.
Linda Acrey, charter member and spokesperson for the Lonoke County Museum, stated, “Plans are already underway for the 2003 fish fry to be even better. If you missed this one, you have got to make our next one. Everyone has such a good time and the cause is so worthy—the preservation of Lonoke County’s diverse history.”
