Not related to this family.
I did not find anything on Herman Goddard but did on Herbert Melvin Goddard.I have found him on each census 1860-1900 and never saw his occ. as a physician.Of course, he could have been too young in the 1880 to have that designation.
Here is a link to the Scott Co AR Goodspeeds. It has a bio on Herbert's younger brother, Samuel and the different places he attended school. It also mentions Narcissa was maiden name Smedley. http://www.rootsweb.com/~arscott/biog6.htmhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~arscott/biog6.htm
Perhaps the schools mentioned in this bio could you be the info you are seeking.
As far as a connection to the Strawns in LR Co., I find no marriages between the families and the census does not show any Goddards in the county. I did see on the 1880 LR Co., that Mary has 4 older brothers, one of which is John 21 who has attended school in the last year. There is an older brother than John, Virgil 23, who has not. Maybe John and Herbert were at the same school and that is the connection between the 2 families.
Good luck,
