Nettie (Wilbanks) and James A. Slayton, Marion TWP, Lawrence Co., AR
Need help in sorting through these marriages/relationships!
J. A. Slaten (21) of Strangers Home, Lawrence Co. AR, married on 25 Dec 1888 Genettie Wilbanks (19), also of Strangers Home. James A(ndrew) Slaten was the son of Enoch Slayton (b. ca 1845) and his first wife Malissa (b. ca 1849 TN); Genettie Wilbanks was the daughter of Mathew Wilbanks (b. ca 1832 TN) and his wife Mary Elizabeth Bird (b. ca 1844 Kentucky).
On the 1900 census of Marion TWP, Lawrence Co. AR, one finds James A. Slayton, Nettie, and their two daughters Martha A., b. Feb 1893 AR, and Maude W., b. July 1898 AR.
According to an Ancestry.com submission, Netty and James Andrew Slayton had a son Charles Andrew Slayton, b. 22 Feb 1903, d. 1 Dec 1971 in Monette, Craighead Co., AR.Here is a puzzle:I cannot find James Andrew Slayton, Netty, or Charles Andrew Slayton on a 1910 census anywhere and I cannot find Charles Andrew Slayton on a 1920 census anywhere.
Adding to the puzzle:J. A. Slayton (35) married on 1 Aug 1908 Mrs. Virgie Poe (35); Virgie was Sarah Virginia White, married 1 James Henry Hawkins, m.2 William Oscar Poe.Had Nettie Slayton died or had they divorced?
By the 1910 census Virgie White Hawkins Poe Slayton was a widow with her two Poe children in Marion TWP.On 25 Sept 1910 Mrs. Virgie Slayton (37) m. John Jordan (21) and Virgie was dead by 1918.
BUT... J. A. Slayton (49) of Alicia, m. on 29 May 1919 Phoebe Ferguson (36) of Alica (she had been married to a Douglas before marrying a Ferguson) and on the 1920 Marion TWP census one finds Andrew (51), Febie (38), his widowed daughter Martha A. Crossman (she had married James Crossman on 14 June 1913 when she was living in Alicia) and her two children William and Gertrude. With Martha being there, she has to be the daughter of James A. Slayton and Nettie Wilbanks.
Were multiple divorces involved in all these remarriages?Or, were the people just saying they were widowed or had married when that was not the case. I'm hoping someone can help me find these Slaytons on a 1910 census.
Any help with these families will be greatly appreciated!!!
