Re: RACHEL SELF

In the past, I viewed the 1880 census listing for the Rachel Self living with William Lell and family on Family Search. That listing states Rachel Self's age as 28, so I discounted this Rachel as my Rachel Self since she'd be a decade too old. My Rachel was born approximately 1860 and would be no older than 21 in 1880.

According to oral family history, Rachel had two sisters and a brother.

According to that same oral history, one of Rachel's sisters married a Glasgow - a nephew William Thurston Glasgow or Glasgo is listed as living with Rachel and her husband in two censuses. Rachel's other sister's married name was Langley, and that sister had a daughter named Sarah. I've found "Aunt Sarey" listed in censuses with her husband in mid twentieth century Arkansas censuses. Based on the birthdate/ages given, she apparently may be the same Sarah Langley born in 1874 and living with her widowed mother, Mary Langley, born 1845, in Clay County Arkansas as listed in the 1880 census. However, I haven't yet been able to find documentary evidence to verify that the Sarah Langley of 1880 is indeed my Sarah Langley ("Aunt Sarey").

One of Rachel's nephews was named Perry Self, and my uncle was under the impression that Perry was Rachel's brother's child. (My uncle can recalls meeting "Uncle Perry" so Perry's name and existence aren't in doubt - though presumably the family relationship might have been misunderstood by a child.)

I'm not sure whether the Perry Self living with the Lell's might be the "Uncle Perry" my uncle knew. My uncle's memory is not what it once was, but I will call him and see if he has any recollection of the approximate age of Uncle Perry when he knew him - was he the same age as Aunt Sarey since she also was born approximately 1873/74?

The Lell name was never mentioned in family history. That isn't necessarily dispositive of there not being some connection between these Selfs and mine - Self isn't that common a name, particularly in rural Arkansas in this period, but based on her age, unfortunately, I doubt the Rachel Self living with the Lells is my great grandmother.

I haven't checked for Perry Self in census listings but that might be a source of some leads.

Thank you for the information. I truly appreciate it.
