Seeking copy or photograph of painting given Gov. Miller in 1877 by Virginia LaFayette (Davis) GRAY (1834ME-1886AR), authoress of 1863-1866 diary published 1983 in Arkansas Historical Quarterly, wife of Colonel Oliver Crosby GRAY (1832ME-1905AR) and found on pages 209 & 210 in "History of the University of Arkansas" (UA) by John Hugh Reynolds and David Yancey Thomas, to wit;

              "...the art department makes its debut in 1874 with Mrs. V. L. Gray as instructor. Apparently her work was voluntary and her pay dependent upon tuition fee and in 1877 she presented the board with a painting of the university building and grounds which they in turn presented to the executive office in Little Rock."

   Don E. Schaefer, University of Arkansas Publication Manager, emeritus, says about 1990 he recorded from page 91 of the 1877 record;

            "In 1877 Mrs. O. C. Gray, chair of painting, presented a painting of the A.I.U. building and grounds to Gov. W. R. Miller to be a perpetual memento."

   Realizing this a significant piece of art, Don searched without success, --- then says he; " ...called Dr. Ferguson of the Arkansas History Commission. He assured me that he knew about every painting in the Capitol, the Governor's Mansion, and in the archives."

After 127-years, painting is not found, have you seen it?.
