this is clearly a long shot on Miranda Workman ...take a look at this census and see what you think...it might be his initials werer originally W J

I noted that on the 1900 census it has Maranda's bp as Nebraska but on the actual enlarged image it is North Carolina and that Mary's childre Maud and Baz were shown with the last name of Workman...
