Danny: Is that 1860 date etched in stone or is it an approximation? The reason I ask is because of a newspaper article which was originally carried in "The Van Buren Press" and subsequently picked-up by the "Daily Arkansas Gazette" [15 July 1868, col. 184, col B]. It concerns an accused horse thief named William Meadows who allegedly stole a horse belonging to a Mr. Burkett. Unfortunatley, like many old newspaper articles, the first name of Burkett is not given. Anyway, deputies went to arrest Meadows but he shot and killed them. A couple of days later, Burkett and some other men went after Meadows and he ambushed two of the posse and killed them too. Burkett was one of them. This all occurred in 1868, around Frog Bayou, near the "Meadows Settlement" in Crawford County, about 200 miles north of Columbia County. I know that Burkett is not an unusual name so it may be just pure coincidence but a line in the article gives pause. It describes Mr. Burkett as "a newcomer and most estimable man". So I wonder if it's possible that your Levi Burkett could have left Columbia County and moved to Crawford County where this incident occurred. Of course, all depends upon how certain you are of the 1860 death date. I also found a book which might help in the search. It's titled: "Abstracts from Crawford County, Arkansas Newspapers", compiled by Evelyn Sue Jones WILLIAMS. It's a multi-volume work with Volume 1 covering the period 3 Feb 1866-13 April 1869. Perhaps it contains more information, particularly a first name for Burkett.
I don't want to send you off on a wild goose chase but thought perhaps this might give you a POSSIBLE area to search. Do you know what happened to his widow? Rick
