My family's story is much the same; they moved from Lafayette County MS in the 1850's to the Emerson area. Try the Bureau of Land Management site to find out when the purchased the land, a good portion of the local land had formerly belonged to the local Indians and was starting to open up for sale. You will also find that a lot of the transients moved on after the war for Texas, again in search of cheap fertile land to farm.
