According to Una Pollard's book on marriage records for the Eastern District of Clay County:

Some researchers think our Clay County records go back into Greene County records, but they all burned.

A portion of Green county's records were burned in 1874. A store room was then rented for a courthouse, and soon thereafter in the sme year, that room with all the balance of the records also burned. The next courthouse was another store room, which with all accumulated records, was burned in 1876.

...

The Eastern district courthouse and records at Piggott burned in January 1893, therefore our records go only back to 1893.
