Looking for anyone researching African Americans with this surname. I have found Charles and Frances/Fannie Fane/Fain in 1900 (Coahoma County, Miss), 1910, 1920 and 1930 in Arkansas in Chicot, Drew and Lincoln counties. I suspect the wife is my grandmother's sister. In 1900, this FANE couple are neighbors of my grandmother Hannah and her first husband, Moses Stoutenberg. My grandfather was Hannah's 3rd husband and all three husbands were from Clark County. We know very little of Hannah's family since she died when my aunt was less than 3 and my father a little more than one year old. We don't know her parents' names and nobody thought to ask questions of the older siblings before senility or death. What I know: I have marriage records for Hannah's 2nd & 3rd marriages I have Hannah in the 1910 census with my grandfather and children from marriages #1 and #3 Hannah died in 1914. I have Hannah's death certificate which says born in Hudspeth (informant my grandfather) Hannah's first child with my grandfather was born in Hudspeth (from his death certificate (died at 19), informant my grandfather.) New information: When I recently told Hannah's great-grandson that I'd found her and his great-grandfather in Mississippi in 1900, he told me that his grandmother (my father's oldest sibling on his mother's side) was born in Jackson MS. I don't expect to find a birth certificate to verify that, but since they were there in 1900 and Aunt Callie was born in 1901, it sure makes sense. Here's what my father and aunt "remembered": Maiden name JONES, from Dermott Had a sister named "Fannie" Fannie had "a bunch of children" One child was named Willie "Payne" Guesses: There may be a brother named Stephen I've researched this PAYNE/PAINE/PANE name for about 10 years with no luck. Until I found the Mississippi census earlier this year, I had no record of Hannah and Moses together, still have no marriage record. In looking at it again a couple of days ago, with a brand new LCD monitor, (and new eyes) I noticed this couple next door named FANE and now I'm off on a new tack. I did note that the FANE wife and my grandmother show birth in Arkansas with both parents born in Louisiana.... gotta be worth something! Nevermind that it's different in the later censuses. ;^) Notify Administrator about this message?
