I am seeking any information on the family of Thomas Crain (Thomas Crane) and his son Jasper Crain (Jasper B. Crain). Jasper was my great-great-grandfather.

Thomas Crain was born in Georgia in 1796, married Sarah Harper in Tennessee in 1829, and went west to Arkansas, settling in Carroll County, Arkansas by 1850:

Source: "Arkansas Pensioners, 1818-1900," compiled by Dorothy E. Payne:

"CRAINE/or CRANE, THOMAS- War of 1812 pension application S.O. #24925 S.C. #18859 W.O. #20273 W.E. #20257. B.L.W. #45722-160-55.

"Service in Captain John Crane's Company of Tennessee Militia from 20 December 1813 to 23 February 1814. He was married twice, first wife not identified. He married Sarah Harper 3 September 1829 at Bolivar, Hardeman County, Tennessee. They lived in Hardeman County until about 1831, when they moved to N.W. Arkansas in Boone and Washington Counties.

"During the Civil War Thomas Crane was forced to serve as a wagonmaster by the Confederates. He had younger sons at home who 'lay in the bush' to avoid conscription into the Confederate army. He had two sons who were residing in Illinois during the war and who were serving in the Union Army. They were Jasper Craine in Co. D 31st Regt of [Illinois] Vols and William T. Craine of Co. F 81st Reg. Ill[inois] Vols. Both of them were killed in the war.

"His daughters, Clarice Brown, formerly Spiller, and Nancy (both of whom are referred to as half sisters to the two boys who were killed) were residents of Jackson County, Illinois in 1875. They reported the 'Rebel' service of their father which caused his pension to be revoked. A special investigation was started, but failed to restore the pension before Thomas' death. He died 9 November 1829 in Hardeman County, Arkansas. His widow was then granted pension.

"In her application the family Bible record has been quoted: 'Thomas Crain was born 21 July 1796, his wife Sarah Crain was born 6 June 1813, Thomas Crain married Sarah Harper 3 Sept 1829 in Hardeman County, Tenn., Maryann Elizabeth Crain was born 13 Nov 1830, Orpha Caroline Crain was born 9 Dec 1833, Jasper B. Crain was born 6 June 1835, William T. Crain was born 16 June 1844'.

"In 1855 this family was living in Carroll County, Arkansas, and in 1871 thru [sic] 1875 they were in Boone County. Widow died about 1894."
