Searching for gg Grandfather; All variations of McNEAL, NEAL, ONEAL
Posted by: Lois Carmack (ID *****0956) Date: November 17, 2002 at 03:01:47
  of 893

McNeal, McNeill, McNiell, Neal, Neale, Neil, Neill, Niel, Oneal, Oneil, Oneill, and Onell

These surnames were found in the 1850 AR census index.

My gg Grandfather was reported as being born in AR, probably before 1852. Source was death certificate of his daughter, Nancy Jane Smothers. His name was reported as Daddy McNeil. Given name is unknown. The informant was the daughter's oldest daughter, Sarah SMOTHERS Ford.

GG Grandfather married a Polly A. Smith? about 1867, place and date unknown.

Polly A. NEAL, age 18 and daughter Nancy J. NEAL, age 2 was in the 1870 Douglas Co MO census in the household of Frank and Sarah OWENS. When and where did Frank OWENS and Sarah ROLANDS Smith marry or were they just living together? There were three SMITH children in the household, from Sarah ROLAND's previous marriage to a Miles SMITH in Miller Co MO in 1845. I am assuming that Polly A. Neal's maiden was SMITH, and this was her mother and siblings.

There is a short story in Turnbo's Manuscripts about a little boy lost who was Henry SMITH, young son of Miles and Sarah SMITH in MO.

Known info on the daughter, Nancy Jane NEAL:

Nancy J. NEAL, age 2 in 1870 Douglas Co MO census.

Nancy A. McNEIL md Ambrose DONALDSON abt 1886-87 in Ozark or Douglas Co MO (J. could have been mistaken as A. when spoken).

Mrs. Jane Donaldson md EMC SMOTHERS in March 1899 in Boone Co AR.

Elisha and Nancy J. SMOTHERS listed in 1900, 1910, and 1920 Marion Co AR census. On some censuses the spelling of names were off. He died in 1926 and she died abt 1943. EMC and Nancy Jane Smothers had four children; Sarah md Ford, Josephine md Merriman, Austin (unmarried), Parzee md Merriman.

Two children drew SS; Josephine Merriman and Austin L. Smothers. Nancy Jane Smothers oldest daughter Effie Donaldson HART md Friend, also drew SS. All three children listed a different surname for their mother:

Effie Donaldson HART Friend listed ONEAL

Josephine SMOTHERS Merriman listed NEAL

Austin L. SMOTHERS listed McNEIL or MCNEAL

On Josephine and Parzee Merriman's obituaries the mother's maiden name was listed as NEAL.

Can anyone add any information to this mystery man? Any and all help greatly appreciated. Anyone wanting to answer directly to me, my email address is:

Have a great day, Lois Carmack
