Joseph Ward and Judah Farmer Ward met and married in Missouri. Since she was under 18, her father gave consent for the marriage. They lived in Howell County where their first child was born. They lived briefly in Willford Co, AR where their second child was born, but moved back to MO for several years. Soon after 1898 the family moved to Mountain Home, Baxter County, AR. While living in AR they built the town of Graceland (named after their daughter, Grace), which had a store, post office, hotel (operated by Judy and their daughters), lumber mill, and tenant houses. Joseph was secretary for these enterprises, which also included a mining refinery that he woned in Sharp County, AR. At one time he was the only person paying income tax in Baxter County. He was known in the area as the "Land Man". The following newspaper article is quotd from the Baxter County Bulletin of Mountain Home, date unknown. The Great and the Near Great in the White River Country Joseph Ward the Land Man of Mtn. Home enjoying his favorite past time on the North Fork. Joe Ward is classed as one of the most successful real estate men in the White River County. He has built his business on the solid foundation on the "Square Deal" and has prospered. His clients always find things just a wee bit better than they expected. Mr. Ward has put more people into Baxter county than any one real estate man has put in any county in the North part of the state, and they are satisfied people too. He has been by far one of the most potent factors to date, that the county has had for developement. He lived in the Ozarks for 30 years, and knows Ozark mountain soil like a book. John Lewis Ward was born either Washington County (now Marion) or at Casey County, Kentucky. His christening was recorded, by Father John Wathen, at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church 1 May 1831. Elizabeth Montgomery was his sponsor. John's firt federal census, at age 9, was in Adair County, Kentucky, 1840, but he ws not named specifically, only the head of the household was named. In the 1850 census of Daviess County, Indiana, John L. was listed as 19 years of age, a farmer, and living in the household of his parents. In 1857 John married Susan Amanda Miles. Susan was almost 19, John was 27. The marriage was performed by a Justice of the Peace in the home of the bride's parents. On 23 November 1857 they repeated their vows at St John's Church in Loogootee, Indiana; Father J. Mougin performed the ceremony which was witnessed by John and Nancy Somers. Family tradition says that John and Susan were second cousins. John and Susan lived in the same neighborhood since they were teenagers; their parents had been friends in Kentucky before moving to Indiana. John was a farmer when he was drafted into the Union Army 14 August 1862 to fight in the Civil War. Child #3 was just over a month old at the time. John was enrolled in Co. B of the 80th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry commanded by C.S. Dobbins and William Mosier. He had a difficult time during his time in the army. As stated in 1890 on his application for an invalid pension: In December 1862 at Columbia, Kentucky, he "contracted a severe cold which resulted in disease of lungs and disease of kidneys and resulting general debility and diarrhea and rhumatism and failur of heart. He was also treated for lung fever at Kingston, Tennessee in November and December 1863". He was in three hospitals in Kentucky during this time--Columbia, Louisville, Elizabethtown--seeking relief from the above problems. Another member of John's company said that John was coughing, complaining of pains in his lungs, and was spitting up blood. He was also treated for chronic hepatitis. Almost three years after he entered the army, he was honorably discharged at Salisbury, North Carolina on 22 June 1865. At age 59 John's physical appearance was listed on his army pension application as 6 feet tall, black hair, gray eyes and a fair complexion. At this timehe stated that although he had been in good, sound physical condition when drafted, he was now "entriely disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries, above listed, received in the service of the United States. The family lived in several places in Indiana and Missouri before settling in Hutton Valley, Howell Co., Missouri sometime before 1885. Even after these many moves trying to improve their financial circumstances, the family remained poor. John and Susan were raised as catholics so they raised their family as Catholics. 1870 Census, Daviess Co, Indiana, Reeves Township 245-219: John age 39; Susan A. 30; Joseph 9, Susan 8, Elizabeth 4, Charles 2. 1900 Census in Hutton Valley: Susan stated she had given birth to 13 children, 9 pf which were living. John and Susan had living with them their two single sons, William and George. Joseph Lewis Ward was born in Virginia. The first record of Joseph Lewis Ward, by family historian, Judy Nixon, was in Casey County, Kentucky in 1819 when he paid taxes on a horse worth $25.00. He was in and out of the tax records of that county after that. Perhaps he was just a young man or a pioneer looking for the right land on which to settle, or perhaps he had relatives in the area. Some family members believe he was married when he first came to Kentucky, but no such records have been found; if he was married, his wife died before 1824. Kewus was kusted as a member of the Holy Name of Mary Parish, Calvary (Washington County which is now Marion County, Kentucky) during the time of 1831 to 1836. The settlements of Clementsville and Calvary were about 30 miles apart. The Clementsville parish, called St. Bernards, was a mission of the one at Calvary, and it is possible that baptismal records were sent from Clementsville to Calvary in the early years, or that the priest from Calvary performed the baptismal rites in Clementsville and took the records with him to be recorded in Calvary when he returned. Government census listing this family are: 1830 Casey County, KY; 1840 Adair County, KY; 1850 Daviess County, IN; Reeve Townshiip page 390 household and family 1536, lists: Lewis age 52 b:VA, Margaret 40 b:KY, John L 19, Rebecca 18, Nancy 17, James P. 14, Joseph 12, Lucy 10, Hilary 8, Lavina 5, Mary D. 2; 1860 census Daviess County, IN, Reeve Township, Alfordsville 649-638, lists: Lewis 62, a farmer, Margaret 49, James 24, Lucy Ann 20, Hillery 18, Levina 15, Mary Martina Dorina 12, Margaret 9; 1880 census Martin County, IN Perry Township 56-56 lists: Margaret 69, Mary 32. It is an interesting puzzle that although Lewis was alive in 1860, Margaret and "her heirs", Levina, Mary and Margaret bought 40 acres in Daviess County on 17 January 1957 (for $32.50). Women in those days did not generally conduct legal transactions unless they were unmarried. Even one of the sons was "promoted" to head-of-household over the mother if the father died. It is possible Lewis was unable to function as the legal head of the house. Most of this same land was disposed of on 7 March 1874. Mary, Margaret Sr., Margaret Jr., and Lucy A. Ward and Nancy Summers (also a daughter) also sold 39 acres for $450.00 saving only one acre for themselves, possible the one acre had the home on it. Very soon after that, the same women (without Nancy) sold this acre to Nancy's husband Thomas Summers for $15.00. *************************** Julia Savage- 1870 census, New York City, New York 7th Ave between 32nd and 33rd St James Savage 57 IRE Junk Dealer Mary 50 IRE James 20 Ellen 17 Michael 15 Jeremiah 13 Julia 9 Maria 4 all ch b MA Notify Administrator about this message?
