WE are still working on this family--I found this on a 1997 message board..Hoping Larry Cox is still out there hunting. Jane Martin Jamesport, Mo (Amish country) rugshop@grm.net ******************************************************** The Mystery of Ruben Marion Henderson Looking for information on Ruben Marion Henderson (sometimes spelled Reuben). His history is somewhat mysterious. Information that he passed on to his descendents after 1910: He lived in Illinois as a young man. He attended Rush Medical College. He served as a surgeon in the Civil War from Illinois. He lived several years in Missouri. He was a country doctor, store owner, and postmaster in Hendersons Ferry, Baxter Co Arkansas. He was married to my great-grandmother, Nancy Jane Berry. She was his second (or possibly 3rd) wife. Modern day descendents all insist that he was well over 100 years old when he died. The most repeated age was estimated at 102 to 104 by some elderly aunts who had seen him while they were children. Yet, census records indicate that he may have been 79 or 85 or 95 or 102. The mystery is centered on his past in Illinois. If he was in fact as old as descendents insist, then he lied about his age for a few census periods. If he was older, then he apparently had five wives instead of the four known about. Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers who served in organizations from the state of Illinois: Reuben M Henderson Co G 31 IL Infantry The 1860 Saline Co IL census has Ruben M Henderson age 21 with wife Edith age 22 (if this is him, this would be wife number one of four) The 1870 Wayne Co MO census has Ruben Henderson age 29 born IL - Farmer & Physician with wife Nancy J. Abadiah Henderson, apparently a younger brother, was living with him. (this is the correct person) The 1880 Baxter Co AR census shows him as Dr R.M. Henderson with wife Nancy. It says both parents born KY & his profession was Doctor. (this is the correct person) The 1900 Baxter Co AR census AR shows him as Ruben M Henderson age 65 (married 35yrs). (this is the correct person and where I base his birth date as March 20,1835) Factors that indicate that he may well have been older as modern day relatives insist: 1) Illinois land records show that Ruben M Henderson owned land in Douglas Co IL in June 1850. (not sure if this is him) 2) The 1850 Coles Co IL census has Reuben Henderson age 32 born in TN. (not sure if this is him) 3) The 1850 Johnson Co IL census has Reuben Henderson age 25 born in IL. Wife was listed as Martha w/ daughter Jane. (not sure if this is him, but if it is then Martha would have been wife #1 of 5 and he did later name one daughter Martha and another Jane) Descendants of Dr Ruben Marion Henderson Ruben Marion Henderson b:Mar 20, 1835 IL d:1920 Wake AR Barry Cemetery +Edith Unknownm: Bef 1860 *2nd Wife of Ruben Marion Henderson: +Nancy Jane Berryb: Jan 1840 in TNm: Abt 1875 Father: John M Berry Mother: Emily C Unknown children 1.
