I recently received a copy of the 1858 Chesterfield County, SC Will of Mary Pitts widow of John Pitts from the SC State Archives. It only names two unmarried daughters by the names of Flora & Catharine Pitts. There was also a son named Alexander Pitts who was born 1818 in Chesterfield County, SC & died in 1880 in Darlington County, SC & was buried there. He was not named in the 1858 Will & I do not know why he wasn't named so maybe Mary Pitts felt like he was more able to take care of himself than were his two sisters but in the 1880's there was a court case involving the heirs of Alexander Pitts concerning the property of Mary Pitts. Now, in the 1800 Census of Chesterfield County, SC as you stated John Pitts was head of his household. Was this the same John Pitts whose wife Mary left the 1858 Will or was this John Pitts the father of John Pitts & Isaac Pitts? Some things we will never know the answer to but if this John Pitts in 1800 was the same man who was the father of Flora, Catharine & Alexander then keep in mind that 3 children were listed in the 1800 census so if this be the same John then him & Mary were producing children for over 25 years from the 1790's through the 1820's I would imagine that your John B. Pitts could have been a son of Isaac Pitts who was still living in Chesterfield County, SC in 1850 & had died before 1860. I think his wife Elizabeth nicknamed Betsy died after 1860. Isaac Pitts Jr died in the Civil War & a daughter of Isaac's named Dorothy'& was nicknamed Dollie was never married but had 5 or 6 children. I'm thinking that the father of those children might have been Ellison B. White. Isaac Pitts, Sr. must have been a man of strong character because in 1840 he signed a petition against the production pf illegal alcohol in Chesterfield County, SC. This info comes from General Assembly Petitions from the SC State Archives My reply doesn't really give you any answers but gives you a lot to think about.
