Hi Crystal,

I couldn't agree more about the sharing of information. It is for this reason that I chose this forum to attempt to exchange information with as many descendants of the soldiers buried in a local cemetery as possible. As this is an aspect of a non-profit restoration effort, there is no charge for any information shared and none is withheld.

If I still seem less than forthcoming, it is for one reason only. Due to the fact that part of our project requires that we raise funds to "restore" the physical location, I had over a hundred inquiries and replies expunged from this site because I made mention of our project by name and included the web site URL. It was judged to be "SPAM."

As a result, I am very careful with what I include in my postings here. I hold nothing back in regard to the information I have on each of the veterans buried in this cemetery. I don't mention the web site or URL unless someone e-mails me directly at steves@toad.net.

As is the case with far too many of the veterans we are directly concerned with, we know very little about W. Appling. Here is what we do know. He served in the 19th Arkansas (Infantry, Cavalry ...?). He was buried in plot B-72 on "Confederate Hill," Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland. Given the date and location of burial, he most likely died in a Federal hospital near or in Baltimore after suffering wounds during the Battle of Gettysburg. His marker has been judged to be unreadable. Our knowledge of him is so far based solely on cemetery records. As we learn more, we will post this information within the archives of our project web site.

Sincerely,

Steve Smith
