In Reply to: John Appling, Rev. Soldier, Georgia by Eleanor Colson of 535

John Appling, Sr b-@1728 married @1753 in Amelia Co. Virginia d-@1775 in Nottaway Parish, Amelia Co., VA. a soldier in the American Revolution. His will may have been recorded in Richmond CO. GA. So place of death may not be correct.

Wife: Martha Grubbs b-@1727 d-July 17, 1790 Big Kiokee, Georgia. She was given two tracts of land as a widow of Rev. War Soldier in 1785. Martha made a will on August 17, 1788

Children:

John Jr. b@1754 Virginia - also served in Am. Revolution d-Sept. 16, 1809, Clark Co. GA. Will recorded in Columbia Co GA Spouse: 1782 (1) Rebecca Carter- unknown birthdate d-Dec. 3, 1788 Kiokee, Georgia (2)Sept. 21, 1797 Eleanor Mayler(Naylor?) d-@1841 - no birth information. They had a son Daniel Appling who was a hero in the War of 1812 and was scheduled to receive a sword from the State of Georgia for his heroism, but he died shortly before the State had planned to present it to him. Have a copy of John and Eleanor's wills and information on the sword. It was hanging in the Govenor's Mansion, but it has come up missing!!

William Sr. unknown birthdate married Mar. 10, 1794 in Columbia Co. Georgia to Martha (Patsy) Dorsett. He died in 1804 possbily Appling, Columbia Co., Georgia. There is a story that he was killed in a duel in South Carolina.

Daniel: no birth date d-Sept. 1, 1786

Lucy: unknown birthdate d@1822 Spouse: John Lamar, the son of Thomas Lamar. b-1740-St. Paul's Parish, Georgia. Capt. in Rev. War. Lucy was probably his third wife. I show two others: Mary Elizabeth Bugg and Priscilla Bugg. John Lamar is listed in the DAR Patriot index.

Elizabeth: unknown info on her. Married to Joshua Wynne b-@1735-d-1805-1808 in Columbia Co. GA was a Major in Rev. War. Listed in DAR Patriot Index.

Martha (Patty)? not sure if she belongs with this family. No other info.

This info is from my mom's notebook. This isn't our direct line so we don't have a lot on them. John Sr's. half-brother, Richard who married Elizabeth Premion is my ancestor. Richard and John's father was Thomas Appling b@1687 at Charles Parish, York Co. VA died-1743 in Amelia Co., VA married 2 times. 1-Ann Jennings (my line) 2-Mrs. Mary Clemons (your line).

Thomas' father was Richard from Dorsett, England b-@1658 d-@1693 in York Co. VA married to Margaret (?)(no other information) about 1682 probably in Virginia. Richard and his brothers, John and Thomas, said to have emigrated to the Colonies at the same time. John and Thomas were supposed to have returned to England. I'm not sure when they returned, but it was before Richard died, because his children, I believe were indentured out. Margaret remarried to Charles Paine.

Richard's parents were Richard Applin and Joyce. Richard died @1698-1710 in Woolland, Dorsett, England. His will mentions his son Richard in the Colonies, according to notes that I have received. So at the time of this Richard's death, the family did not know that son Richard was dead. Joyce died probably before 1690 in Woolland, Dorsett, England.

Richard Applin parents were Richard Applin and Hester Pytterd. married @1621, Martock, Somerset, England. Richard died before 1662 in Woolland, Dorsett, England. Hester died after 1662 in Wolland, Dorsett, England.

I don't have anymore info past that except speculation that our original family name is "Abeline" and that they may have been of Norman descendant.

Ian Appling in England has done extensive research on this family and is writing a book. I understand that he just recently married. I posted an e-mail address for him previously. You can give him a buzz and see what happens.

I would be willing to copy what I have on this family for you. Just let me know!

Take Care - Karen Appling-Hand
