I was looking in the Library of Congress site and saw a mention of an Appleton that was on George Washingtons staff. I don't remember his first name (if they gave it) or rank and I have never fiqured out his lineage. Appletons can be found as early as the 1700s in Maryland. The oldest record was Elizabeth Appleton, 1711 in Calvery County. There was a Thomas Appleton and his wife Susannah that lived in Baltimore County around 1810. They had at least 4 children named Jane, Mary Ann, Margaret, and
Thomas. In the city directory he is listed as a Carver. This information was found at the Maryland Archives in Thomas Sr.’s administration papers for the settlement of his
accounts after his death. He died Aug. 2, 1831.
I have been tracing the Appletons that came over to Ipswich Mass. in 1635 and have not found any link to the people mentioned above. I'm sure this info is just more clutter in your studies, but I do hope it helps. Bye, John A.
