Dear Janice,
I'm sorry to tell that the John APPLEBY born in Gainsborough in 1894 is not your grandfather - he's actually mine. He married Edith Booker and died in Kent in 1985. I'm afraid there's no doubt about this - as I knew him (and his sister Evelyn) well, and my mother knew John and Betsy (Cocking), his parents. I see your posting is quite old, which probably means that you've discovered some alternatives by now - I know how frustrating it can be to pursue an erroneous lead,so I did want to let you know before you wasted any further time on it.
