Hi Sue!

My Grandfather James William Appleby told me astory of his Grandfather who was a riverboat captain on the Mississippi. His wife died and he needed a housekeeper so the Catholic Church found a girl named Annie but he had to marry so it would look right. They fell in love and had a son James William Appleby, my grandfather's father.
In the 1860 census there is a William Applebay, riverman born in Ireland, age 45 (born in 1815) living with his wife Anna and his brother James. The St. Louis Marriage records shoul William Appleby married Anna F. Ward on 8 March 1861. This proves Grampa Applbey's story! It was very exciting to find these records! Now I am looking for information on when Capt. Appleby came to America and where he was born in Ireland, and who his parents were.
Unfortunately, I don't recall having heard of relative in Butler County. My father's name i Robert William Appleby and he had an uncle named Charles. Uncle Charles was born in 1910 in St. Louis.
Let me know what you think!
