Another thing I would like to add is that spelling was not set by any system until about the middle of the nineteenth century, and family members in- say, Georgia might spell the name different from their cousins who settled in Maine. Another problem is that names were deliberately changed so that members of a defeated army could settle among their former foes without suspicion. I personally had trouble tracing the ancestors on the "Surface" line until I found out they were originally German (Hessian?) "Zerfass". German sounding names were also changed during the two World Wars.
